Adams State College - 208 Edgemont Blvd. Alamosa - The
Department of Sociology
Bachelor of Arts with emphasis in Criminology & Social Welfare. The Department of Sociology blends the academic with the practical. Students are instructed in the major sociological theories underlying social life and society and are provided opportunities to apply this knowledge hands-on in the community.
The Sociology Department is committed to preparing students for careers in human services and criminal justice, as well as for admission to graduate programs in Sociology, Social Work, and Criminology.
Sociology majors complete 46 credit hours of sociology courses and select at least one emphasis area either in Criminology or Social Welfare.
In addition, students complete one or more semester-long internships in a community agency specializing either in human services or criminal justice.
The UAB Department of Sociology fosters a creative and supportive interdisciplinary environment that provides quality graduate and undergraduate training, original research advancing knowledge, promoting health and social justice, and service to the discipline, community, state, nation and world.
The Department of Sociology aspires to be the leading Medical Sociology program in the country.
The focus of instruction at the graduate level is the sociology of health and medicine. Students are trained broadly in theory and methods, but the primary goal is to train medical sociologists. We encourage an interdisciplinary approach and seek to maintain and grow our partnerships with the Schools of Medicine and Public Health, and campus interdisciplinary research centers.
Anthropology and Sociology at Albion
Anthropology and sociology are distinct fields united by a common interest in understanding human beings and their communities. In this department we explore how racial, gender, and class differences affect people's experiences and life chances. We investigate whether personal troubles such as poverty, harassment, or family dysfunction are really public or social problems. Our courses examine global processes of change, human evolution, family and kinship, education, religion, media, art, disability, and healing. The Department of Anthropology and Sociology offers majors and minors in both anthropology and sociology, with opportunities for students to take courses and work with faculty in both fields.
Both anthropology and sociology at Albion emphasize hands-on research and help to prepare students for a wide variety of careers in government and the private sector. Recent graduates of the department have gone on to work in fields as diverse as public policy, law, urban planning, social work, business administration, veterinary medicine, historic preservation, government, and journalism. Our alumni have pursued advanced degrees in sociology, cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and American studies at many different universities, including Harvard University, the University of Michigan, Indiana University, the University of Wisconsin, UCLA, and the University of London.
