Rod Stewart gave simple and beautiful lyrics, like "Never been a millionaire and I tell you mama I don’t care." Stewart was criticised for breaking the widely observed cultural boycott of apartheid South Africa by performing at the Sun City resort complex in Bophuthatswana as part of his Body Wishes and Camouflage tours. Since turning 50, life has been as turbulent as ever for him; marriage to Rachel, two children, divorce, a serious cancer scare, more albums released and concerts given, singing for the Queen at the Jubilee concert - and, naturally, a new blonde on his arm, Penny Lancaster.

In January 2020, Stewart and his 39 year old son, Sean, were arrested and Stewart was charged with alleged assault following an incident at a Florida hotel. He is due to appear in court on 5 February. - “Rod Stewart charged over alleged altercation at Florida hotel”. - The Guardian.

In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked him the 17th most successful artist on the "Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists". A Grammy and Brit Award recipient, he was voted at #33 in Q Magazine's list of the Top 100 Greatest Singers of all time, and #59 on Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Singers of all time. As a solo artist, Stewart was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and was inducted a second time into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 as a member of Faces.

He was knighted in the 2016 Birthday Honours for "services to music and charity". Rod Stewart was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2007 New Year Honours for services to music. At his investiture in July 2007, at Buckingham Palace, Rod Stewart commented: "It's a marvellous occasion. We're the only country in the world to honour the common man."

On 31 December 1994, Stewart played in front of 3.5 million people on Copacabana beach in Rio, and made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for staging the largest free rock concert attendance in history. - "BBC World Service – Witness, The Biggest Rock Concert Ever". BBC.

Stewart is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. Stewart was estimated to have a fortune of £190 million in the Sunday Times Rich List of 2019, making him one of the 10 wealthiest people in the British music industry.
